Finding Time for Leisure
Krystal Ellis • Oct 15, 2023

It can be hard to find time for leisure

Sometimes it may feel as though we have an endless list of chores or work to get through before we can relax. However, chores never go away, and although the tasks themselves might be important, so is taking care of ourselves.

Finding time to relax is crucial to wellbeing, and actually makes us more productive in the long term. Let's take a look at the benefits and how we might utilise them for more enjoyment and life satisfaction.

Rest and Rejuvenation:

Leisure time provides us with an opportunity to rest and recharge. Engaging in activities that we enjoy like sport, games, reading, hobbies and gardening helps to alleviate stress, reduce burnout, and improve our mental and physical health.

Taking breaks from work or responsibilities allows us to return with renewed energy and focus, ultimately enhancing our productivity.

Enhancing Creativity:

Hobbies can foster creativity and innovation. When we engage in activities purely for enjoyment, our minds are free to wander, explore ideas, and think outside the box.

Whether it's pursuing a hobby, reading a book, or engaging in artistic endeavours, leisure time provides a fertile ground for creative thinking and problem-solving. This can energise and relax us into a state of flow that we may not get a chance to experience during work or domestic labour.

Strengthening Relationships:

Booking in time for yourself offers an opportunity to connect with friends and family and build stronger relationships.

Engaging in team sports, sharing a meal or simply spending quality time together promotes bonding, communication, and understanding. It allows us to create lasting memories and deepen our connections, something we know enhances wellbeing.

Personal Growth and Self-Reflection:

Once we have taken care of ourselves by finding time for enjoyment, we may find space for personal growth and self-reflection. It allows us to explore our interests, passions, and values, leading to a better understanding of ourselves.

Maintaining Work-Life Balance:

Ensuring we make time to enjoy ourselves is the definition of work-life balance. It helps prevent burnout and promotes overall well-being.

By setting aside dedicated time for leisure activities, we create boundaries between work and personal life, ensuring that we prioritise self-care and maintain a sense of equilibrium. A mindset that might sound like "if I just get this done then..." can lead us to burning the candle at both ends and eventually we may burnout.

It is essential to find whatever time we can, even if it is only a few minutes, to relax and rejuvenate.

It isn't always possible to find the time for leisure. Although there are always times where we may simply have no choice but to grind it out, balancing the grind with the rest is key to enjoying life and avoiding stress induced illness.

Sometimes you may have more opportunity that you think to find free time if you can adjust your mindset and priorities. This is where counselling can be beneficial to achieving the work life balance you want. At EASA we offer services that could help provide you with the insight and knowledge needed to take steps towards a fulfilling life. If this has resonated with you, consider booking in with a counsellor.
