Spotting Psychosocial Hazards: Identifying Risks in the Workplace

We often think of workplace hazards as physical—slippery floors, heavy machinery, poor lighting. But some of the most harmful risks are invisible. They’re not found in faulty equipment or broken stairs. They live in the culture, in the workload, in the relationships between people.

These are psychosocial hazards—and they’re a growing threat to wellbeing, performance, and retention in every industry.

What Are Psychosocial Hazards?

Psychosocial hazards are aspects of work that can negatively impact an employee’s mental health, emotional wellbeing, and overall psychological safety. These include:

  • Excessive workload or unrealistic deadlines
  • Bullying, harassment, or discrimination
  • Lack of role clarity or constant change
  • Poor communication or unresolved conflict
  • Isolation or lack of support
  • Exposure to traumatic content or situations

Left unchecked, these risks contribute to stress, burnout, anxiety, absenteeism and even long-term psychological injury.

Why Early Identification Matters

Psychosocial hazards don’t always shout, they whisper.

They show up in disengaged teams, high turnover, frequent sick leave, or tension that lingers just beneath the surface. But early intervention can prevent serious consequences.

Leaders and employees alike must be able to:

  • Recognise early signs of distress in teams and individuals
  • Understand the impact of poor work design and toxic culture
  • Use tools and frameworks to assess risk factors
  • Take proactive steps to support mental wellbeing at work
