4 September 2021 is World Sexual Health Day, which brings greater awareness of sexual health, celebrates sexuality and promotes sexual rights.

What exactly is sexual health? Sexual health involves the state of physical, mental, and social well-being regarding sexuality, and it isn’t just about relationships, it includes medical issues, education, and sexual behaviour. A major part of being sexually healthy is having a respectful attitude toward sexuality and sexual rights.

Some sexual rights include:

  • Equality and non-discrimination
  • Autonomy and bodily integrity
  • Being free from all forms of violence and coercion
  • Access to high quality sexual health care
  • Privacy
  • Access to accurate information
  • Education
  • Deciding to have children and how many to have
  • Access to justice 


Thus, for sexual health to be attained and maintained, the sexual health of all persons must be respected, protected & fulfilled.

There are several things you can do to get involved with World Sexual Health Day.

Firstly, you can learn more about the importance of sexual health by taking part in a conference or listening to a podcast that discusses sexual health. Secondly, if you have children, and they are the appropriate age, you can talk to them about the importance of safe sex and respecting sexual rights.
